Name :-Prayas Children's Home State :– Delhi Areas covered:-New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi Railway Station Working with:-Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi Railway Station Major issues:- ISurveys conducted by various bodies have shown that Delhi is steadfastly becoming next hub of children who are run away from their homes, some of who are abandoned or lost. These children come to Delhi in search of a better life and end up on the streets working as porters or cheap labor in tea stalls or as shoeshine boys, rag pickers, beggars and even pickpockets and are often abused because of their vulnerability. Objective:-To provide neglected and homeless children with shelter home facility. To For the holistic development of a child education, nutrition, recreation and vocational training are being provided. About the project in brief:-A pilot project of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India the construction of its building was funded by the Planning Commission and the government of National capital territory of Delhi. Inaugurated in January 1999, it offers residential care for 300 children between the ages of 6-18 years. It also covers children coming to the home for a shorter period, under the provision of the new Juvenile Justice Act, 2000. Presently home accommodates 285 boys. Moreover experts and counselors are working round the clock to trace out any link of their (children) families so that they can be restored back to their respective families. Besides health care the children are also provided alternative education at shelter home and are being mainstreamed under education scheme. Being an active volunteer of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan project, Prayas encourages children’ desire to become literate. So far 211 children have been enrolled and 98 have been mainstreamed. Apart from education Prayas also provide vocational training program to expose these children to various vocational fields. Children participating in this program get the chance to realize their dream of becoming independent professionals. |
